Pathological study of laryngeal polyp

Abstract
It seems to be generally appreciated that the most common benign laryngeal tumor is a polypoid growth originating on the vocal cord margin. The anatomical concepts underlying this recognition were first advanced by Hajek and an analysis of a large series of benign tumors of the larynx by New and Erich called attention to the preponderance of non-neoplastic growths.
59 patients of laryngeal polyp were operated under the general anesthesia at Seoul National University Hospital from Jan. 1972 to June 1975. Following results were obtained.
1. Total 1,743 patients were admitted at ENT clinic during the same period and 9.2% out of them were patients with laryngeal problem. Among the laryngeal problems; laryngeal polyp was most prevalent and occupied 36.9%.
2. Age and sex distribution revealed marked preponderance after age of third decade and M:F ratio was 1.7:1 prevalent in male, but after age of 6th . decade female was more prevalent than male.
3. Unilateral cases were 4 times more than bilateral cases and most predilection site was the junction between Ant. 1/3 and Post. 2/3 of true vocal cord.
4. Main pathologic changes of surface epithelium were acanthosis and keratinization.
5. Main pathologic changes of subepithelial connective tissue were edema, fibrosis and telangiectasis, and there were degenerative changes such as amyloid, myxomatous and hyaline degeneration.
6. There was no specific change at basement membrane.
